New cars waiting in line bird's eye view

The Motor Industry Association (MIA) reports that registrations of new vehicles for the month of September 2022 are down by 9.9 per cent compared with the same time last year.

However, it was the second strongest September on record for registrations (14,879 total) as it was boosted by strong electric vehicle sales.

The vehicle market year to date is down just 0.2 per cent compared with the first nine months of 2021.

Just over 10,600 passenger cars and SUVs were registered last month which is 10.7 per cent (1273 units) down on last year’s figure. It was a similar story for commercial vehicles with 4278 units being registered, down 7.9 per cent (366 units) on September of last year.

Like August, September registrations benefited from strong deliveries of back orders for pure electric vehicles (BEVs), with 2418 units going to new owners.

What were the top three models registered in September 2022?

In first place was crowd favourite Tesla Model Y with 1502 units, clinching the top spot from last month’s best seller, the Ford Ranger, which saw 1043 units registered. In third place was the Toyota Hilux with 989 units.

Who were the market leaders for September 2022?

Toyota was the market leader for new registrations for last month with 18 per cent market share (2668 units), followed by Mitsubishi with 14 per cent (2094 units), and then Tesla with 10 per cent market share (1554 units).

What were the most popular electrified vehicles in September 2022?

There were 2400 fully electric vehicles registered for the month with the top selling model being the Tesla Model Y (1502 units). The BYD Atto 3 came in second with 221 units and the MG ZS in third with 178 units registered.

Plug-in hybrids saw 491 units registered with the top selling models being the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross (167 units), Mitsubishi Outlander (138 units) and the Hyundai Ioniq (41 units).

There were 1674 mild hybrids registered with the highest selling model being the Toyota RAV4 (246 units), the Toyota Yaris Cross (184 units) in second and the Hyundai Ioniq (150 units) in third.

SUVs remain the leading market segment

Once again, the SUV medium segment took the top spot with a 29 per cent share of the market last month, followed by compact SUVs with 21 per cent and pick-up/four-wheel drives making up 14 per cent.
