One last fling: Aston Martin teases V12 Vantage Final Edition

Words: Matthew Hansen

by Matthew Hansen
December 2, 2021

As Aston Martin hurtles towards going almost entirely electric by 2030, it’s started teasing yet another likely ‘last hurrah’ model; the Vantage V12.

The teaser didn’t come in the form of some arty farty abstract imagery or trippy camouflage wrap. In true Aston Martin fashion, the teaser is a brief but telling 14-second audio file detailing how the model’s 12-cylinder engine will sound.

The video is accompanied by the text “never leave quietly”, and in its own messaging Aston Martin included the quote; “You’ve heard about it. You will certainly hear it coming. V12 Vantage. It’s not just a Limited Edition, it’s a Final Edition. Returning in 2022.”

It’s clear that this is some not-so-subtle messaging indicating that the new V12 Vantage could be the end of the line for Aston Martin’s V12 engine, for the current Vantage model, or perhaps both.

The marque has already detailed that the Vantage will become fully electric in its next generation, although when exactly this will happen appears up in the air. 2025 appears to be the most likely date, giving those keen for an internal combustion engine Vantage a few years yet.

It’s expected that the Vantage’s big brother, the DB11, will make a similar switch at a similar time. “The succession of our traditional sports segment has to be full electric, no doubt,” Aston Martin CEO Tobias Moers told Automotive News Europe in July.

The announcement of a V12 Vantage gives a handy dose of excitement to a model that hasn’t been able to deliver competitive sales for the marque. The Vantage’s lack of popularity was considered one of the reasons behind the brand’s recent financial shortcomings, although the success of the more recently launched DBX seems to be steadying the ship.

It’s rumoured that the V12 Vantage’s arrival will coincide with a facelift across the rest of the Vantage line-up. Stay tuned to NZ Autocar for more updates as they come to hand.
