Border clearance procedures for imported used vehicles set to change

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency

by Matthew Hansen
November 15, 2021

Upcoming changes to the border clearance procedures for imported used vehicles mean from 16 January 2012, two clearance stickers will be required on each imported used vehicle before it can be released from Customs Controlled Areas (CCAs) or MAF transitional facilities.

From 16 January 2012, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) will no longer undertake structural inspections on imported used vehicles on behalf of the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA).

The service within New Zealand will then be provided by two independent providers – KMA (NZ) Ltd (KMA) and Independent Verification Services Limited (IVS). The NZTA’s off shore inspections will be carried out by JEVIC and by KMA’s joint venture partner Autoterminal Japan Ltd. (ATJ).

Once the inspector has completed his/her structural inspection and has approved the vehicle for entry, a purple NZTA sticker (below) will be applied to the driver’s side windscreen wiper arm of the vehicle. The vehicle can be released when both the NZTA and the MAF biosecurity inspection stickers are affixed to the vehicle.
