Watch: 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 EV spotted testing in Germany

Watch: 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 EV spotted testing in Germany

Hyundai’s Ioniq EV sub-brand has been a hot topic ever since they debuted the concept versions of the Ioniq 5 and the Prophecy.

Well, as the former begins to roll out in New Zealand in its production form, a sedan likely to have been inspired by the latter has been spotted testing in public.

Video from YouTube channel CarSpyMedia shows the Ioniq 6 being driven on a raft of roads in Germany. It’s expected that the model will receive a full unveiling some time next year.

The vision shows a sedan with a very traditional sedan silhouette; a stark contrast to the slick, suave Prophecy concept. It’s worth taking the vision with a grain of salt, obviously, given the amount of camouflage coating the Korean EV.

The canvas and bolstering covering the boot lid is such an odd shape that it’s likely to be hiding some kind of curious silhouette underneath.

The 6 will be based on the same E-GMP electric platform as the Ioniq 5, meaning it’s likely to get a similar assortment of powertrains and battery packs. For reference, the Ioniq 5 offers around 470km of range in its base two-wheel drive, single-motor variant.

While many have touted the Ioniq 5 as being Hyundai’s answer to Tesla’s best-selling Model 3, the 6 appears to be a better match given that the pairing are a similar sedan shape. Given that the 6 is expected to be some two years away, Tesla is unlikely to be shaking in its boots just yet.
