Updated Tesla Model Y Production Underway Soon

Words NZ Autocar | Images Autocar UK

The refreshed version of the world’s best-selling EV is about to enter production in Shanghai, and will evidently bring significant improvements.

When production starts in Europe and the U.S. is still unclear. Expect the revised Model Y to debut in H1 of 2025.

Known as Project Juniper, Tesla will build the Model Y refresh at its massive production facility in Shanghai. This supplies China and many other world markets.

Model Y prototypes are testing both in China and America, the front and rear ends camouflaged. Expect redesigned fascias and light clusters, and there may even be full-width light bars each end. Revised wheel designs and new paint colors are also likely.

Inside, this should mimic the Model 3 Highland update. So no indicator and transmission stalks, although these are available as an aftermarket add-on. And materials and assembly quality are also set to improve, as they did in the Model 3 refresh.

The revised Model 3 also received a more compliant suspension set-up, with frequency selective dampers. So you would expect similar underpinnings for the Model Y Juniper.

There is also the possibility of a six-seater version of the Model Y, available for China and Europe but not the United States.

Tesla hasn’t rushed the Model Y update because Musk said it was not a priority, allowing engineers to concentrate on the Cybercab. However, there are many rivals taking aim at Model Y. Hence, the imminent release of the facelifted model in China, and US production will likely follow soon after.
