Scalpel to a bike fight

Words NZ Autocar | Images KTM

February 8, 2022

The 2022 KTM 890 Duke R has been released, sporting a new Atlantic Blue base colour, reminiscent of the firm’s GP bike, and that’s about the beginning and end of differences from the model that debuted in 2020. We thought we’d remind you about it because of the ace imagery provided.

Cornering, not crashing

It remains the consummate hooligan, or the Super Scalpel as KTM likes to describe it, on account of its “lightning-fast steering geometry”, among other things.

Covering its tracks

Powering the all-round supernaked is an 890cc parallel twin poking out a “class leading” 121hp and 99Nm of torque. The bike, according to its makers, is aimed at “race-centric riders looking for agility, punch and poise”.

Features include fully adjustable WP Apex suspension, radial-mount Brembo Stylema monobloc calipers with an adjustable Brembo master cylinder, and Michelin Power Cup 2 tyres as standard.

Keep C of G low for safer cornering

There’s also cornering ABS and cornering TC thanks to its six-axis inertial measurement unit, and up to four ride modes (Rain, Street, Sport and optional Track). Figure too on nine levels of TC, on/off for wheelie control,  and user adjustable throttle control settings.

Same thing from another angle

And finally, an orange finish to the tubular steel frame because it’s an R model. KTM PowerParts specially developed for the 890 Duke R will be available from KTM dealers, along with matching riding gear.

The R will cost $21,199 in the Atlantic Blue hue, and the standard 890 Duke $17,849, with the bright GP orange a la the Tech 3 team going for $18,199.
