One of the most unique road-going Ferrari F40s ever made has appeared for auction courtesy of RM Sotheby’s, packing an impressive amount of power and racing history under its name.

This 1989 Ferrari F40 “Competizione” started life as a stock example that was delivered to the Kroymans BV, the official Ferrari importer of the Netherlands.

Just three years after leaving the factory floor, it was rebuilt for racing by Cavallino Tuning where it received suspension, brake, and bodywork upgrades including a yellow repaint.

The 352kW 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V8 was left untouched at the time and was used for racing by Dutch Racing Promotions over the course of the 1993 and 1994 race seasons.

To remain competitive in racing, in 1995 the car was modified yet again with a full suspension upgrade, air jacks, Stack instrumentation and major engine work.

Power output was increased to between 522kW and 746kW and modifications were made for it to compete in the Ferrari/Porsche challenge.

It raced until 2006 with Ferrari Collector and racing driver Michel Oprey whenl it was sold to a UK-based racing team who raced it until 2009.

Upon its acquisition, the car’s current owner had it shipped to specialist bodywork shop Zanasi Group in Maranello, Italy. Zanasi has a near sixty-year relationship with Ferrari and handles the brand’s custom paint jobs, and its tailor-made and Icona series cars.

The F40 was completely disassembled and repainted in Grigio Nardo, or flat grey, replacing its iconic red paint scheme.

It was also mechanically serviced at Zanazi, with invoices totaling over €123,000 ($NZ200,000).
