Hyundai’s mid-engine supercar officially canned

Back in 2018, there was speculation that Hyundai was developing a mid-engine supercar but it has been confirmed that the project will never see the light of day.

The head of N division at Hyundai, Albert Biermann, recently told Top Gear that the Korean brand was in fact working on an N supercar.

While the car didn’t have a name, Biermann said the car would have featured a carbon fibre monocoque chassis with the engine mounted in the middle – basically a Honda NSX rival.

So what killed it? An expected price tag of over $US150,000 was the deciding factor in the supercar’s fate with Biermann saying to Top Gear, “at the time it was thought a Hyundai could not have this price.”

Hyundai’s N cars like the i30N and i20N have proven the brand is capable of making a fun to drive and affordable road car but it does leave us wondering what could have been.

However, the recent reveal of the N Vision 74 concept car is a good sign of what else could be in store.
