Toyota confirms another 100 GR Yaris for NZ showrooms

Words: Matthew Hansen

Those who missed out on the first shipment of quickly snapped up Toyota GR Yaris hot hatches celebrate Christmas early today, with the Japanese marque’s local arm confirming that a second allocation of GR Yaris’ is on its way to our showrooms.

After 20 GR Yaris hit showrooms when the model was launched last year, another 100 units are now on their way. They’re expected to arrive in mid-2022.

The GR Yaris’ critical acclaim and limited numbers have seen its local prices soar, with most models currently listed for sale online asking more than $10,000 over the brand new $54,990 sticker price, and some with low kilometers asking for around $20,000 over sticker.

In a press release, Toyota New Zealand CEO Neeraj Lala praised the GR Yaris for aiding in boosting the firm’s performance car profile in Europe with its ties to the World Rally Championship, adding that he expects these 100 new units to be snapped up quickly.

“[The] Supra made a successful comeback, but still, I have always wanted [a] sports car purely made by Toyota,” said Lala.

“When we won [the] WRC manufacturer’s title last year, I felt Toyota became recognized all over Europe, and that made me think that we must have a winning car to gain worldwide recognition as a true car manufacturer. This GR Yaris is the sports car we made from scratch to win at world level.”

“I encourage any customer wanting one of the 100 additional GR Yaris units to register their interest at their nearest Toyota Store. The global demand for this vehicle continues to be very high, so they will go fast.”

The GR Yaris comes on a bespoke TNGA platform with four-wheel drive, paired to a turbocharged 1.6-litre triple producing 200kW of power and 370Nm of torque and a slick six-speed manual transmission.
