These are the Kiwis racing overseas this weekend

It’s another massive weekend of motorsport ahead with Kiwis competing on all corners of the globe!

IndyCar returns to action in Detroit, joined by Indy Next, while Madeline Stewart returns for the Porsche Sprint Challenge North America.

Jaxon Evans and Brendon Leitch are in action in France, Leitch running double duties in both Lamborghini Super Trofeo and the Paul Ricard 1000. Louis Sharp will also take to the track in British Formula 4.

Indonesia hosts a double-header of Formula E races, while Chris van der Drift returns to the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia in Korea.

Scott Dixon, Scott McLaughlin & Marcus Armstrong – IndyCar Detroit Grand Prix

  • Where: Streets of Detroit, Michigan, USA
  • NZ Times:
    • Practice 1: Saturday 7.00 am
    • Practice 2: Sunday 1.05 am
    • Qualifying: Sunday 5.20 am
    • Final Warm-Up: Monday 6.30 am
    • Race: Monday 7.00 am

The month of May is done, but IndyCar is already back on track with this weekend’s Detroit Grand Prix.

Marcus Armstrong, Scott Dixon and Scott McLaughlin will all be racing, with the two latter having raced in the Indy 500 on Monday just gone.

Dixon is the best of the Kiwis on the championship ladder, sitting fifth, just one place ahead of McLaughlin. Despite not competing on ovals, Armstrong is currently the best of the five rookies in this year’s competition.

Mitch Evans & Nick Cassidy – Formula E – Jakarta E-Prix

  • Where: Jakarta International E-Prix Circuit, Ancol Beach, Indonesia
  • NZ Times:
    • Practice 1: Friday 8.25 pm
    • Practice 2: Saturday 1.05 pm
    • Race 1 Qualifying: Saturday 3.30 pm
    • Race 1: Saturday 7.30 pm
    • Practice 3: Sunday 1.05 pm
    • Race 2 Qualifying: Sunday 3.30 pm
    • Race 2: Sunday 7.30 pm

Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy are both setting the Formula E season alight, having split the last four race victories between themselves.

Cassidy is the current points leader in the series, while Evans isn’t far off the pace in fourth. Formula E will race twice this weekend on the built-for-purpose Jakarta International E-Prix Circuit.

Brendon Leitch & Jaxon Evans – GT World Challenge Europe – Circuit Paul Ricard 1000km

  • Where: Circuit Paul Ricard, Le Castellet, France
  • NZ Times:
    • Qualifying: Saturday 9.00 pm
    • Race: Monday 3.30 am

Brendon Leitch and Jaxon Evans will both line up in the Paul Ricard 1000 this weekend.

Leitch is competing for Leipert Motorsport in the Silver class, sharing the drive of the #70 Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo2 with Kerong Li and Jean-Francois Brunot.

Evans will have Team Parker Racing’s Porsche 911 GT3 R (992) at his hands, competing in the Bronze class with Derek Pierce and Kiern Jewiss.

Brendon Leitch – Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe

  • Where: Circuit Paul Ricard,  Le Castellet, France
  • NZ Times:
    • Qualifying: Saturday 6.10 pm
    • Race 1: Saturday 11.25 pm
    • Race 2: Sunday 8.05 pm

The 2023 Lamborghini Super Trofeo season kicks off this weekend at Paul Ricard, with Brendon Leitch running double duties and driving the #86 Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo2 in addition to his Paul Ricard 1000 duties.

Unlike last year, Leitch is running this year’s competition solo and will stay at the wheel for all 50 minutes of both races.

Louis Sharp – British Formula 4 – Thruxton

  • Where: Thruxton, UK

    • Qualifying: Sunday 12.05 am
    • Race 1: Sunday 5.10 am
    • Race 2: Monday 2.00 am
    • Race 3: Monday 5.30 am

Louis Sharp enters the fourth round of the British Formula 4 season at the top of the table, consistently at or near the front of the field.

Sharp will compete three times at Thruxton this weekend as the series races in support of the British Touring Car Championship.

Hunter McElrea – Indy NXT – Detroit Grand Prix

  • Where: Streets of Detroit, Michigan, USA
  • NZ Times:
    • Race 1 Qualifying: Saturday 9.30 am
    • Race 1: Sunday 3.55 am
    • Race 2: Monday 4.40 am

Hunter McElrea returns for the fourth round of the Indy Nxt championship sitting fifth in the standings having finished fourth last time out at Indianapolis.

Indy NXT are racing in support of IndyCar’s Detroit Grand Prix.

Chris van der Drift – Porsche Carrera Cup Asia

  • Where: Korea International Circuit (Yeongam)
  • NZ Times:
    • Qualifying: Saturday 2.25 pm
    • Race 1: Saturday 6.35 pm
    • Race 2: Sunday 2.00 pm

Chris van der Drift will take to Korea International Circuit with Team Shanghai Yonda for two races in this weekend’s round of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia.

Van der Drift sits second in the standings following the opening round where he finished second in Race 1 and third in Race 2.

Madeline Stewart – Porsche Sprint Challenge North America

  • Where: Virginia International Raceway
  • NZ Times:
    • Qualifying: Sunday 2.45 am
    • Race 1: Sunday 7.10 am
    • Race 2: Monday 3.55 am

Madeline Stewart returns to the Porsche Sprint Challenge North America series sitting third in the standings.

She will race twice over the weekend in Virginia, competing for JDX Racing. Stewart has finished on the podium three times in her class, and became just the second female to take pole in American one-make series history in the season-opener at Sebring.
