New vehicle registrations continue to be subdued. For April, the Motor Industry Association says 8839 new vehicles were registered, which is just over four per cent fewer than in April 2024 when 9223 were registered.

MIA chief executive, Aimee Wiley, says April’s results continue an overall declining trend for the beginning of the year.

“Registrations to the end of April totalled 41,380 vehicles – a 3.9 per cent drop on the 43,079 registered over the same period in 2024. This is likely due to continuing tight economic conditions impacting spending behaviour.”

For cars and SUVs, registrations at 6092 were down slightly (0.3 per cent) while light commercial (2367 units) were down 5.8 per cent on the numbers registered to the end of April 2024.
