Open-wheel weekend for Kiwis racing overseas

It’s relatively quiet for the Kiwis racing overseas this weekend with only Formula E and USF2000 featuring New Zealanders.

Both Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy are in Brazil for the Sao Paulo E-Prix as Formula E makes its Brazilian debut. Jacob Douglas is also in action when he takes to Sebring for two USF2000 races.

There’s also plenty happening on our shores with Pukekohe’s final race meet expecting to draw a massive crowd ahead of its closure next week.

Nick Cassidy and Mitch Evans will be competing on the streets of Brazil this weekend for Round 6 of the 2023 Formula E season.

Cassidy is one of the in form drivers of the series at the moment having podiumed at the past two events, first in Hyderabad and then again in Cape Town. He sits fifth in the standings but has closed the gap to championship leader Pascal Wehrlein to 37 points.

Evans has proven he has the pace to be at the front through his qualifying efforts, including taking pole in India. Some poor luck has hurt his chances in the races of late meaning a good haul of points is crucial this E-Prix to remain in contact with those ahead.

Jacob Douglas is back in business for rounds 3 and 4 of the 2023 USF2000 Championship when the series hits Sebring for two races this weekend.

Douglas was subjected to a difficult opening round on the Streets of St. Petersburg but still managed to salvage some points to sit 10th in the championship.

It’s expected to be a different story for the young Kiwi come race time at Sebring following on from his success on the circuit in the YACademy Winter Series. Douglas competed against a range of F4 and USF2000 drivers on the same circuit and came away with victory in all three races.

Whilst it’s still early days in the championship, a solid showing at Sebring should shoot Douglas right up the leaderboard and put him right in the mix with the leaders.
