Next MG ZS EV Breaks Cover

Words NZ Autocar | Images Auto Express

October 15, 2024

The successor to the MG ZS EV will be an all-new, all-electric small SUV based on the MG4 hatchback. It will even take a new name, though that is yet to be disclosed. In China it will be known as ES5. Expect a formal unveiling a few months after the ICE power ZS debuts.

Much sharper styling for ZS EV's replacement.

The images you see here were discovered by Auto Express in patents filed with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Prototypes have also emerged in the UK wilds. A global unveiling will take place for the EV any day now.

Styling shows more than a few hints of the MG4 and influences from the MG Cyberster. Headlights are much slimmer. It also gets black plastic cladding on the wheel arches and sills, along with roof rails because it is an SUV.

New ZS EV is larger in all dimensions than the vehicle it supersedes.

On the bonnet it wears a large octagonal MG badge iproudly, and the front bumper features an air intake for cooling the motor and battery pack. At the rear is a full-width light bar with Y-shaped tail-lights, like on MG4.

MG’s new electric SUV is much larger than before, measuring 4476mm long (+162mm) and it has a wheelbase of 2730mm (+149mm). It is also wider and lower than its predecessor.

And there it is also in white.

The new electric SUV sits on the same Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) as the MG4. It should therefore be available with similar battery/motor (125kW) combinations. The longest-range version should do 500km on a single charge. It will use a new lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery sourced from CATL.

MG’s UK product boss confirmed to Auto Express that the same MSP platform will serve as the underpinnings for a larger mid-size electric SUV. Both are currently testing in the UK. The bigger SUV will go on sale in the UK next year. It will be a competitor for Skoda Enyaq and Kia EV5. The new ZS EV will compete with Kia EV3.
