More Sports Cars Coming from Toyota

Toyota has dropped the strongest hint yet that it is preparing to revive the MR2 and Celica. It is also suggesting a renewal of GR86 and GR Supra.

The hints came from the company’s cartoon strip, named Grip. It revealed a whiteboard containing a list of new models, including the above and the GR GT3. 

This is all supposition of course but the teaser does follow months of suggestions that the Gazoo Racing line-up is due to expand dramatically.

Moreover, Akio Toyoda, key to implementing the GR brand, has spoken of his aim to revive the Celica, MR2 and Supra.

A conundrum for the firm is whether or not the new Celica utilises an electric car platform. The FT-Se concept of last year’s Tokyo show sits 75mm lower than the Porsche 718 Cayman. A low seat height essential for a sports car. This is made possible by splitting the electric platform into three modules, with single-piece front and rear ends.

The new platform is intended for a cab-forward two-seat sports car like the MR2, which is based on the FT-Se concept. Whether or not it takes the MR2 badge is unclear. But the rumour is that the S-FR roadster concept of 2015 is going into production. Although its engine would be mounted up front, not amidships, this MX-5 rival would make an interesting MR2 reincarnation. 

As to the next-gen Supra, this is at least three (if not four) years out given the current car was launched in 2019.

The GR86, meanwhile, must be rehashed to meet new crash safety standards and engine emissions regulations. It will likely adopt a hybrid version of the turbocharged three-pot from the GR Yaris.

Toyota has not confirmed this, though a spokesperson said such a vehicle would be a “good idea”.

The GR GT3 supercar was shown in concept form in 2022.
