Confirmation that Liam Lawson will step up to Formula 1 for Racing Bulls for the remainder of the 2024 season marks a significant milestone in New Zealand motorsport history.

Although Lawson already gained valuable experience with five races as an injury replacement in 2023, his permanent promotion to Formula 1 solidifies his place among the sport’s elite and promises to leave a lasting impact.

At just 22, Lawson is part of an elite group of just ten Kiwis who have raced in Formula 1. He follows in the footsteps of icons like 1967 World Champion Denny Hulme, McLaren founder Bruce McLaren, Chris Amon, and Brendon Hartley.

Deborah Day, President of Motorsport New Zealand, expressed immense pride in Lawson’s accomplishments: “This is a proud moment for both Liam and the entire New Zealand motorsport community,” said Day.

“Liam’s success is a testament not only to his exceptional talent but also to his perseverance and dedication, which are critical to competing at the highest levels of motorsport.”

“We have no doubt he will make his mark on Formula 1. I am incredibly excited to see what the future holds for him and look forward to celebrating his success on the world stage.”

Motorsport New Zealand is committed to fostering the next generation of motorsport talent. It will ensure that pathways to the top of the sport are accessible for young aspiring Kiwi drivers.

On Thursday, Motorsport New Zealand announced an exciting new partnership with Rodin Cars. The association aims to create a clear pathway from the New Zealand Formula Ford Championship to Formula 1. The winner of the upcoming championship will have the chance to earn a fully funded drive with Rodin Motorsport, providing they excel in an evaluation test.

“Liam’s achievement solidifies New Zealand’s reputation as a breeding ground for world-class racing talent, showcasing the nation’s ability to nurture drivers capable of competing at the highest level of motorsport,” added Day.

“Our partnership with Rodin Cars strengthens our commitment to developing New Zealand talent and ensuring our drivers have the opportunity to shine on the world stage.”

Lawson will make his highly anticipated debut as a full-time Formula 1 driver at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, from October 18-20.
