KTM Super Duke Adds CCs and Powers Up

Words NZ Autocar | Images KTM

December 11, 2023

The Super Duke R and Super Duke R Evo have been freshened for 2024. Clearly 1290cc wasn’t enough displacement for The Beast which now comes with a 1350cc V-twin LC8 engine. The bore has been increased by 110mm to make it so. A new camshaft and fuel mapping help the engine meet EURO 5+ emissions standards.

Next year marks three decades of Duke, hence the update. The new supernakeds come with 190hp developed at 10,000rpm (142kW) and 145Nm of torque arriving at 8000rpm. There’s a new, more aggressive look too.

An all-new LED headlight unit dominates, while tank spoilers and winglets add menace and downforce. With a lower profile and more compact look, the Super Duke adds extra aggression; KTM says more attitude with less altitude.

A new air intake and airbox allow an extra 1.5L of fuel, the tank now holding 17.5L. This takes riding range out to around 300km.

The new headlight design removes almost a kilogramme of weight, while adding further belligerence. It auto-adjusts in intensity according to ambient light conditions, and remains on after the ignition has been switched off, illuminating the surroundings.

Other updates include new Michelin Power GP tyres with dual-compound technology, and a refreshed fully adjustable WP APEX shock absorber. There are separate high- and low-speed adjustments, and preload is varied via a knurled knob. New 48mm WP APEX Open Cartridge forks with split function optimise front end set-up.

The Evo variant comes with WP Semi-Active suspension Technology (SAT). It features electronically controlled magnetic valves for variable damping, providing a wide range of adjustability. The Suspension Control Unit adapts the damping rates via the magnetic valves on the fly, reading the road surface and rider style to automatically adjust the suspension in real time.

Both bikes get new Performance and Track modes, complete with lap timer and telemetry, and optional Engine Brake Control. They each come with 30-year colour schemes, reminiscent of the orange paint job found on the original 2005 KTM 990 Super Duke.

We have asked the local distributor when these arrive and the estimated pricing so will update you on those when we hear back.
