Hyundai’s Spectacular N Vision 74 may yet enter production

A year ago we reported that Hyundai’s N Vision 74 would definitely not go into production. Now Hyundai has said that its reimagined Pony concept car may yet become a reality. So who knows for sure? If it does, expect it to cost a kidney or two.

The radical Hyundai N Vision 74 concept caused a huge stir online when revealed in 2022. Everyone seemed to approve of its retro wedge-shaped lines. Hyundai must have noticed the adulation because the Korean giant seems to have changed its mind. A limited production run now seems possible.

How do we know? A presentation slide from the company’s 2024 CEO Investor Day shows this striking concept car as one of the future production vehicles. On the slide, the car’s name is included among the high-performance EVs the brand will deliver by 2030. Another is the yummy Genesis Magma (below).

Other than confirmation it will be delivered by 2030, there’s no other information to hand. The brand hasn’t indicated when precisely it will go on sale, and nor has it announced potential pricing or how many it is producing.

However a news item out of Korea suggested that the N Vision 74 might arrive as early as 2026. It said just 200 examples are being built, with each costing roughly $NZ600k. Ouch.

That’s perhaps because its powertrain features a hydrogen fuel cell, just like the N Vision 74 concept, and output is a suggested 567kW.

This concept car featured a fuel-cell stack over the front wheels, a 62kWh T-shaped battery mounted low down in the centre of the car, two hydrogen fuel cells at the rear and a pair of electric motors to drive the rear wheels. 

The design is evidently a modern take on the Hyundai Pony Coupe concept from 1974, penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro. He was also responsible for the Delorean – Great Scott, who knew? – which may explain the resemblance to the N Vision 74 concept.
