Honda updates Civic; single model now $59,990

by Richard Edwards
December 31, 2024

Honda New Zealand has released its updated 11th-generation Civic hatchback, now offered exclusively as a hybrid and priced at $59,990.

This positioning places it notably higher than segment rivals such as the Toyota Corolla and Mazda3, though comparing it to those traditional rivals is becoming more difficult. The Civic measures 4,550 mm in length, with a 2,735 mm wheelbase, a width of 1,800 mm, and a height of 1,415 mm, delivering an estimated 695 litres of cargo capacity. By comparison, the Corolla Hatch is 4,370 mm in length, while the Mazda3 Hatch measures 4,450 mm, making the latest Civic notable for its roomier cabin and more expansive cargo area.

Under the bonnet, the Civic adopts Honda’s e:HEV hybrid powertrain, pairing a 2.0-litre direct-injection engine with a two-motor system for a combined 135 kW of power and 315 Nm of torque. The drive system is complemented by four distinct modes—Econ, Normal, Sport, and Individual—that adjust throttle mapping, steering feel, and other vehicle parameters based on driver preference.

Inside, the new Civic features Google Built-In, which provides Google Assistant, Google Maps, and access to apps through Google Play. A 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system supports both wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto. The Bose audio system, panoramic sunroof, and leather-appointed finishes contribute to the Civic’s more upmarket interior, with the latest Honda Connect interface focusing on improved user-friendliness and quicker response times.

Safety has also been updated through enhancements to Honda Sensing. The system benefits from improved camera software and includes lane departure alerts, collision mitigation braking, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and road departure mitigation. Parking sensors at the front and rear, along with a 3-angle reversing camera, are standard.

According to Mr Nobuya Sonoda, managing director of Honda New Zealand, “The Honda Civic is a longstanding model in our lineup. This 11th generation introduces our latest e:HEV technology and a larger format. We look forward to customers experiencing its features and performance.”

The e:HEV Honda Civic Hatch Sport became available for order on 27 December 2024 at Honda dealerships nationwide and at Honda.co.nz. Buyers can choose among five colour options—Ocean Blue Pearl, Premium Crystal Red, Platinum White Pearl, Crystal Black Pearl, and Sonic Grey Pearl.
