Highlands reveals details about NZ’s longest-ever GT enduro

by Harrison Wade
August 8, 2023

Highlands Motorsport Park has revealed the first details about its tenth-anniversary meeting, the Highlands Six Hour, which will be New Zealand’s biggest and longest-ever running endurance race.

Taking to the track will be a maximum field of 32 GT3, GT4, and Open Class cars, with entries being accepted from domestic and international competitors.

A classic ‘Le Mans’ type start to the big Sunday race, a Top Ten Shootout for qualifying, grid walks, and non-stop off-track entertainment throughout the weekend are all on the cards and circuit owner Tony Quinn and his team are tempting fans with a unique giveaway for the event.

Up for grabs for one lucky spectator buying a weekend pass in advance for the weekend will be the actual Lamborghini Huracan used for hot laps at sister circuit Hampton Downs. The car has been maintained to the highest possible standards for its important role at the North Waikato track but on Sunday, November 5, the keys will be presented to one lucky winner ready to drive away.

In the past decade, Highlands Motorsport Park has established itself as one of the premier innovative tourism and motorsport venues in the Southern Hemisphere with world-class facilities, over 12 activities onsite, an outstanding setting, and close proximity to Queenstown and its international airport.

The technical and challenging circuit has also caught the imagination of every driver who has competed on it with its unique bridge feature, ultra-fast sections, and range of fast and slow corners. In 2024, the circuit will also play host to the New Zealand Grand Prix, one of only two official Grand Prix events recognised by the world governing body FIA outside of the Formula One World Championship.

“The tenth year will be our biggest and most significant in many ways,” said circuit CEO Josie Spillane. “And the tenth anniversary Highlands Six Hour Enduro will be the centrepiece of that big year. So it seems completely fitting to mark it with our most spectacular ever fan competition.

“Fans can only be in with a shot of driving the Lambo away by pre-purchasing discounted weekend passes online and being there on the day. That’s why we are out there nice and early with the event details so people can plan and get it locked and loaded in their diaries.

“It’s going to be an adrenalin-filled weekend for everyone whether they are families watching, die-hard enthusiasts, or drivers competing on track in one of the weekend’s big races. We put maximum effort into all of our events but this one is going to be very special indeed.”
