Ford Ranger tops the market in 2024

by Richard Edwards
January 3, 2025

The Ford Ranger emerged as New Zealand’s best-selling vehicle of 2024, recording 11,741 registrations and surpassing the Toyota RAV4 by over 1,200 units.

With impressive dynamics for a commercial vehicle, the Ranger is still capturing the wallets of those with either a concrete mixer, surfboard, or both.

The Toyota RAV4 maintained its popularity in the passenger vehicle segment, achieving 10,530 registrations and capturing a 12% share of that market. Its appeal to families and urban drivers remains strong – as well as rental and commercial fleets – contributing to its continued success.

The Toyota Hilux secured the third spot overall and second in the commercial segment, with 7,295 registrations. Despite a slight decline compared to 2023, the Hilux remains a reliable choice for many New Zealanders.

Mitsubishi’s ASX and Outlander models also performed well in the passenger vehicle market, with 3,763 and 3,248 registrations respectively, reflecting the growing preference for compact SUVs among Kiwi drivers.

With a changeover of model, the Mitsubishi Triton achieved 4,230 registrations, securing it in the strong position of the market’s third most popular ute.

Overall, the 2024 vehicle market in New Zealand experienced a decline, with total new vehicle registrations down by 14.2% compared to 2023. Passenger vehicle registrations decreased by 20.8%, while the commercial sector saw a 7.4% increase, highlighting a shift in consumer preferences towards commercial vehicles.
