New Zealand racing driver Marcus Armstrong has impressed following a recent IndyCar test at the Thermal Club track in California.

The Kiwi was the fastest of the rookie drivers and ended the weekend’s two testing sessions in fifth overall.

That put him ahead of fellow countryman Scott McLaughlin in eighth and Chip Ganassi Racing (CGR) team mate Scott Dixon in tenth.

However, Armstrong’s team mate Marcus Ericsson was the one to beat after he went fastest overall.

The 22-year-old signed with CGR at the end of last year following a successful three seasons in the FIA Formula 2 Championship where he scored four wins and eight podiums.

Armstrong will partner with veteran Dixon in the #11 car for the 2023 IndyCar Series to compete in the season’s non-oval races.

“I’m ecstatic to be a part of the IndyCar Series, but especially with Chip Ganassi Racing because it is such an iconic and successful team,” said Armstrong following the announcement last year.

“I have an extraordinary opportunity in front of me to learn from people that have been performing at the absolute highest level in this sport.

“As a Kiwi, I’ve always watched Scott Dixon succeed in the championship with this team, so on a personal level this is quite special for me.”

The Kiwi will make his IndyCar race debut on the streets of St. Petersburg on March 5, 2023.
