What part of New Zealand pays the most for fuel?

The Commerce Commission has just released its Quarterly Fuel Monitoring Report, revealing which part of New Zealand pays the most for fuel.

For the quarter ended 30 September 2022, Wellington was the most expensive part of the country to buy all types of fuel.

Prices in the country’s capital had an average high of $2.66 per litre for Regular 91 octane petrol, $2.90 for Premium (95 and 98) and $2.46 for diesel in Q3 of 2022. Wellington was also the most expensive place to buy fuel in Q2 2022 as well.

At the other end of the scale, the average fuel price in Christchurch was the cheapest of them all with 91 octane costing $2.59 per litre while Premium cost $2.75.

However, Tauranga was the cheapest of them all for diesel which had an average price of $2.37 per litre.

The largest fuel price variation in New Zealand was seen across Auckland with 91 octane prices varying by 22 cents per litre, Premium by 29 cents, and 31 cents for diesel.

The Commerce Commission noted that consumers in Auckland could save up to $264 a year when buying Regular 91 or $348 for Premium 98 if they shopped around with the help of price comparison sites and apps like Gaspy.
