Tesla Gigafactory Nevada

Tesla has announced it will invest a sum of $US3.6 billion ($NZ5.5 billion) into its Gigafactory in Nevada in order to ramp up battery and Semi truck production.

The investment will see two new factories be built including a 100GWh 4680 cell factory, of which are used in the Model Y’s battery, as well as the carmaker’s first high-volume Semi truck factory.

Upon completion, the new battery factory will have the capacity to produce enough batteries for around 1.5 million light duty vehicles per year.

Tesla’s new Semi plant will see manufacturing of the model be increased as the brand begins its first deliveries of the model.

The fully electric Semi can travel 800km on a single charge while hauling a combined 37 tonnes.

Both factories will add a combined total of 3000 new team members, achieving almost half of its ten year, 6500 additional employee goal for Gigafactory Nevada.

Since 2014, the carmaker has invested $NZ6.2 billion ($NZ9.5 billion) into the 501,676 square metre facility where it has produced 7.3 billion battery cells, 1.5 million battery packs, 3.6 million drive units, and 1 million energy modules.
