KTM massages 890 Adventure R

Two years after its launch, KTM has refocused its 890 Adventure R dual purpose bike with the aim of improving offroad ability, and reducing rider fatigue.

The updated bike was launched recently in western Idaho, USA, at the 2022 KTM Adventure Rider Rally.

Borrowing ideas formulated for the KTM 450 Rally, the updated 890 Adv R utilises fully adjustable 48mm WP XPLOR forks and a WP XPLOR PDS rear shock, re-tuned to provide improved feel. Progressive damping at the rear means off-road riders are subject to reduced fatigue on demanding trail sections. 

The Rally special also provided inspiration for a bodywork redesign, with a new fairing, fuel tank, and cowling, and improved aerodynamics and ergonomics. The windshield is revised, with improved air flow, and so too the five-inch TFT display with a fresh appearance and intuitive graphics for ease of using and swapping between the menus. There’s now a turn-by-turn navigation system that allows the rider to select the preferred destination. A new call-out function includes the option of 10 favourite or most frequently called numbers.

KTM has fitted the next generation of ABS control unit that uses input from myriad sensors to apply the correct amount of braking force for any situation. Off-road ABS is an integrated element of the Offroad mode. There’s also an optional Rally mode that sets the ABS appropriately.

The single-piece seat is a new colour, and its design ensures mobility while optimising grip. Mitas Eduro Trail+ tyres are said to offer additional stick off road.

There’s a new Demo Mode that debuts on the 2023 model. Riders can take advantage of all the specs and options for the first 1500 kilometres before deciding which features they want to keep. Options include heated grips and seat, a quickshifter and cruise control. Finally, there’s also a new hazard switch and extra engine protection.

Expect the revised 890 Adventure R here early next year.
