911 Carrera T updated, cabrio model added

NZ Autocar magazine

Porsche 911 Carrera T

Porsche continues to revamp its 911 range, the newest variant being the Carrera T. This is Porsche’s lightweight 911 model ‘for driving enthusiasts’.

Specified in the appropriate manner, it can weigh 1478kg, 40kgs lighter than the 911 Carrera. Not sure if you’d deem that a proper lightweight, but by today’s bloated standards, we guess that is. The weight saving is achieved with things like reduced interior insulation and thinner windows.

While the T is supposed to be the driver’s machine, you can now get it as a Cabriolet, so there goes your weight saving and ultimate body rigidity.

Read our drive story of the 1973 911 Carrera RS

The T is positioned between Carrera and Carrera S with ‘pure driving pleasure, agile handling and emotive sound’ being the focus. The latter is achieved thanks to a standard sports exhaust system.

Can you still get a manual transmission for the Carrera T?

Well yes, that’s the point of it. But you can probably option it with an auto too.

The T uses a 3.0-litre flat six, twin-turbo making 290kW and 450Nm. The standard gearbox is a six-speed manual, complete with a throttle blipper, with drive sent to the rear.

The Sport Chrono Package is standard and that helps the T hit 100km/h in 4.5 seconds, the cabrio driver being 0.2sec behind.

Brakes are decent with 350mm rotors and six piston calipers at the front.

The new T should be more dynamic with the inclusion of rear axle steering as standard and a more direct steering ratio up front. Adaptive sports suspension is also standard and has been given a Carrera T specific tuning. Meanwhile Porsche says they have tuned the anti-roll bars front and rear for neutral handling.

Nerds will like the manual shift pattern sticker on the rear windows. The shortened gear lever is topped with an open-pore, walnut laminated wood gear knob. There are yet more shift pattern logos inside as well.

How much is the Porsche 911 Carrera T?

Prices start at $291,904 for the Coupe and $308,900 for the T Cabriolet.
