Volvo releases Black Edition XC90

Words NZ Autocar | Images AutoExpress, Volvo

October 5, 2025

Who doesn’t like a moody, stealthy black variant of a firm’s range topper? Volvo has duly obliged with a Black Edition XC90 that brings dark, moody styling to the flagship seven-seater SUV. The Black Edition will be available in both mild hybrid, and plug-in hybrid variants.

Nice grille and other blacked out highlights of course.

Erik Severinson, Chief Commercial Officer at Volvo Cars, says the company is responding to a “clear demand from our customers”. The XC90 recently also benefited from extensive technology and design updates.

XC90 is still Volvo's premium seven-seater.

At the heart of the Black Edition package is a high-gloss black finish applied to all main exterior details. This includes the Volvo ‘iron mark’ badge, the grille, rear badges, and the alloy wheels.

A good look with the Thor's hammer headlights here.

While the Black Edition has traditionally utilised Onyx Black paint, Volvo has expanded the body colour options to include Crystal White, Denim Blue, and Vapour Grey.

Nice simple layout here, looks easy enough to master.

Inside, the dark theme continues with the choice of two all-black interiors, both with a charcoal headlining and chequered aluminium decor. The charcoal-coloured seats come in two different material options.

The XC90 is the fifth Volvo model that gets a Black Edition variant, after the XC60, EX40 and EC40, and the XC40 mild hybrid.

Over and out forever from me. Bye guys.

Evidently a Black Edition of the EX30 electric SUV is in the wings.

The new Black Edition is available across various trim levels as well.

We have asked whether or not the Black Edition XC90s are New Zealand bound, and await an answer.
