VW says its new Tayron five- and seven-seat SUV will fit handily between the Tiguan/ID. 4/ID. 5 and the larger Touareg SUV.

While the local line-up is not yet finalised, we’d expect a similar situation to Australia. There the Volkswagen Tayron range kicks off with the base seven-seater 110TSI Life. Then there’s the five-seater 150TSI Life with all-wheel drive and 2.0T engine. This includes an off-road driving mode, adaptive damping and a 2500kg braked towing capacity.
Next up is the better equipped seven-seat 150TSI Elegance. The range is capped with the 195TSI R-Line. That combines higher levels of performance and dynamics while retaining family practicality.

All models are 4.8m in length, and offer 705L of luggage capacity as a five-seater. There’s 850L as a seven seater, with the third-row seats folded flat.
The base Life Tayrons come with 18-inch alloys, keyless access and alarm, a powered tailgate, and a surround camera. There’s also a widescreen driver display, a 12.9-inch touchscreen with sat nav, and wireless smartphone connection and charging.

The safety kit includes adaptive cruise with stop and go, AEB, BSM and RCTA, self parking, nine airbags and traffic sign recognition.

The Tayron 150TSI Elegance seven-seater adds 19-inch alloy wheels, chrome roof rails and trim, rear privacy glass, LED Plus headlights and a heated steering wheel. There’s also leather upholstery, and sport seats with power adjustment, heating, ventilation, massage and memory function.

An optional Sound & Vision package includes head-up display, a Harman Kardon premium audio, a bigger screen, HD Matrix LED headlights, and dynamic indicators at the rear. Another option is a panoramic sunroof.

The range-topping 195TSI R-Line features Golf GTI power in the form of a 195kW/400Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged engine with 4Motion all-wheel drive. It can hit 100 in a claimed 6.1sec.
Naturally it comes with extra kit like R-Line styling enhancements, 20-inch alloys, HD Matrix LED headlights, premium LED tail-lights with 3D animation, a Harman Kardon premium audio, a 15-inch touchscreen, a head-up display, and progressive steering. The panoramic sunroof is an option, as is a Black Style external package.

The new cabin has the look and feel of the Touareg and Tiguan, while specification is highly competitive in the large SUV sector.
