Toyota New Zealand has added another sporty SUV variant to its line-up, in the form of the new Corolla Cross GR Sport.
According to the brand, this Corolla Cross GR Sport is “more than just a styling exercise”, citing suspension upgrades and new performance hardware as the main changes over the standard SUV.
At the top of the list of new additions is a rear bumper reinforcement, which has been added to the lower back of the chassis. According to Toyota New Zealand, this brace reduces body flex through cornering, and adds stability.

The standard MacPherson strut suspension system and the electronic power steering system have both undergone GR tuning, which has reportedly improved the SUV’s balance, while retaining a comfortable ride quality.
Other changes beneath the SUV firmer suspension bushings and new shock absorbers that contribute to a 10mm lower centre of gravity compared to the standard Corolla Cross.
As is the case with other GR Sport models, the Corolla Cross gets an aggressive new aesthetic thanks to a new front bumper, new matrix grille, and new bi-beam LED headlights. A set of new 19-inch black alloy wheels complete the look.

On the inside, the performance-inspired SUV gets a pair of bolstered GR Sport seats up front, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with a GR badge. Paddle shifters, aluminium pedals, and GR accents throughout the cabin round out the interior changes.
As for performance, the Corolla Cross GR Sport retains the standard 2.0-litre four-cylinder hybrid petrol engine, making 146kW and 188Nm. This is paired with an e-CVT transmission, sending power to all four wheels — which is exclusive to this model in the Corolla Cross range.
A revised Sport mode is also included, as is a ‘Snow Extra’ driving mode, making use of the electric-assisted all-wheel drive system.
The Toyota Corolla Cross GR Sport is available now, priced from $54,990, representing a $3,000 premium over the standard SUV.
