Toyota announces model line up for 2026 RAV4

Toyota New Zealand has confirmed details of its next-generation RAV4, arriving in 2026 with a broader model range, fresh styling, and the new plug-in hybrid option.

The sixth-generation RAV4 will be available in three styles; Core, Adventure, and GR Sport with two powertrains (hybrid and plug-in hybrid) and a choice of front- or all-wheel drive. The expanded line-up is designed to meet the diverse needs of private, fleet, and enthusiast buyers alike.

This is the RAV4 Core

Plug-in power arrives

Toyota will offer a RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) in New Zealand, combining electric-only driving for daily use with hybrid efficiency for longer trips. The PHEV range includes a front-wheel-drive GXL, an all-wheel-drive XSE, and a high-performance GR Sport flagship.

Toyota New Zealand Chief Strategy Officer Andrew Davis says the new model reinforces the brand’s multi-pathway approach to electrification.

“The RAV4 has been the best-selling passenger vehicle in New Zealand for the past three years, and this new generation will broaden its appeal even further,” he said.
“The introduction of the PHEV showcases our commitment to giving customers powertrain choice – whether that’s hybrid efficiency or the ultimate combination of power and electric performance.”

The RAV4 PHEV GR Sport pairs a 2.5-litre hybrid system with a 22.7kWh lithium-ion battery and dual electric motors to produce 227kW, making it the most powerful RAV4. Toyota says the PHEV’s larger battery sits low in the chassis for improved handling, while tuned suspension, stiffer bracing, and a wider track deliver “a genuinely thrilling drive.”

Here’s what the Adventure will look like

Three Styles, Multiple Powertrains

Toyota has restructured the 2026 RAV4 line-up around three distinct models:

  • Core – The versatile, urban-friendly option, available in hybrid and PHEV forms, offering strong value and everyday practicality.
  • Adventure – A rugged, all-wheel-drive hybrid designed for active lifestyles, featuring off-road drive modes, trail-ready bumpers, and roof rails.
  • GR Sport – The performance flagship, offered exclusively as a PHEV AWD with enhanced dynamics and aggressive styling.

Core: everyday versatility

The Core range focuses on hybrid efficiency and comfort, featuring grades such as GX, GXL, XSE, and Limited.
Hybrid models use Toyota’s fifth-generation system combining a 2.5-litre petrol engine with electric assistance for 143kW of total output.

Highlights include:

  • GX – 17-inch alloys, LED headlights, 10.5-inch infotainment with wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.
  • GXL – 18-inch alloys, privacy glass, electric driver’s seat, and wireless phone charging.
  • XSE PHEV AWD – 20-inch alloys, two-tone paint, moonroof, heated and ventilated Ultrasuede seats, panoramic view monitor.
  • Limited – 20-inch machined alloys, panoramic roof, head-up display, and a nine-speaker JBL premium audio system.

Adventure: For the weekend explorer

Positioned for those who love the outdoors, the Adventure is an AWD hybrid with added toughness and capability. It gains unique bumpers with integrated silver skid plates, black wheel arches, bridge-type roof rails, and trail and snow modes for extra traction on slippery surfaces.

Inside, the Adventure features synthetic leather trim, heated seats, a powered tailgate, and a 12.9-inch touchscreen, blending luxury with durability.

This is for the adventurous types

PHEV with electric drive

Toyota NZ says the RAV4 PHEV delivers enough electric-only range to cover most daily commutes but doesn’t issue an actual number.  It says the hybrid system eliminates range anxiety on longer journeys. Toyota says owners can “charge it overnight and drive all week without visiting a petrol station.”

Davis says the PHEV could be the “ultimate mobility solution” for Kiwi drivers.

“It provides a long-term solution for some, and a stress-free transition from hybrid to full electric for others,” he said.

Arriving Mid-2026

The new RAV4 range will reach New Zealand showrooms from mid-2026, with PHEV demonstration vehicles set to arrive in Toyota Stores around the same time. Pricing and final specifications will be announced closer to launch.
