Mazda is set to unveil its third-generation CX-5 medium SUV soon, opening a new chapter for its best-selling model. A teaser campaign with three images reveals the front and rear of the vehicle and a darkened profile. These suggest an evolution of the existing design, with cues borrowed from CX-90 and new 6e saloon and SUV.

Designed to fit a wide range of lifestyles, Mazda says new CX-5 delivers a more confident design, added comfort, and greater versatility. That’s while retaining the driving enjoyment that’s expected of every Mazda.
Expect also increased interior space and cargo capacity in the redesign, along with improved ride comfort. It utilises the firm’s ‘Small Platform’ for better rigidity, enhancing NVH, among other things. Styling includes bolder proportions and a more confident stance, says Mazda of its versatile medium SUV.

The company says buyers should also expect more human-centric technology, and an extensive array of driver assistance systems for ‘an effortless and rewarding drive’. It suggests the cabin will be ‘uncluttered’, meaning a probable move to a column shifter.

“Its finely tuned dynamics and smart safety technologies deliver a more connected and reassuring driving experience.”
Likely as not, CX-5 will debut with a traditional petrol engine, possibly a SkyActiv-Z 2.5-litre four-cylinder in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged forms. There will be front-drive and AWD variants, as before. The more efficient engine is required to meet harsher Euro7 emissions regulations.
A hybrid version of this engine is also in the wings, likely with one electric motor. It’s needed for CX-5 to compete effectively with the likes of RAV4, Sportage and Tucson. The in-house hybrid isn’t due for a year or so yet though. A PHEV version is a possibility too but don’t expect an electric CX-5; that’s handled by the CX-6e.
The new CX-5 should dot down here late 2025 or early next year.
