The MGS5 EV goes on sale with bonus prize for earlybirds

by Peter Louisson
August 18, 2025

MG Motor New Zealand says its new MGS5 EV will go on sale this month, available with two battery sizes and in Excite and Essence spec variants. Price range from $44,990 to $54,990, all exclusive of ORCs. Those in early go home with a free wall charger.

Really a well designed, nicely balanced package is the MGS5.

A driving range of up to 430km (WLTP) is evidently possible with the 62kWh battery. It is also available with a 49kWh pack (340km of range, WLTP). Both are of the LFP variety. MG says a 30 to 80 per cent recharge takes 19 minutes on a fast charger. All variants are RWD and feature a rear-mounted motor that’s good for 125kW and 250Nm of torque. Zero to 100 takes a tick over eight sec for each.

Think of the MGS5 as the SUV version of the MG4. It shares the same Modular Scalable Platform with the hatch, so should have similar rear-drive dynamics. The battery pack is 110mm high, creating added passenger and luggage space.

Standard items include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a 12.8-inch display. This features MG’s upgraded interface technology. Essence adds a hands-free power tailgate and panoramic sunroof.

MG New Zealand is offering a free bonus for the first 30 customers who take delivery of an MGS5; they will also receive a 7kW MG Charge Hub when they collect their car. The MG Charge Hub means owners can recharge their vehicle from 10 to 80 per cent overnight.

Seats are similar to those in the upcoming MG4.

Peter Ciao, CEO for MG Motor Australia and New Zealand, commented, “The MGS5 EV will offer the best value for Kiwi families in the electric SUV segment.

“Our MG engineers have designed a beautiful looking car, featuring a great range of technology features as standard.

“New Zealanders loved the driving dynamics of the MG4, and these are carried over to the MGS5 EV.

This has quite a relatively aggressive fascia for an electric SUV.

“Our love of an SUV, combined with MG’s upgraded tech features, means the MGS5 EV is sure to be embraced by Kiwi motorists.

“2025 continues to be an exciting year for MG Motor New Zealand and the MGS5 EV reflects the value MG is committed to delivering. Whatever stage they are in, MG will deliver unmatched value for all New Zealanders.”

Other MGS5 features include 40:60 split rear seats, 453-1441L of boot space, and five-link rear suspension. The MGS5 is also compatible with MG’s iSMART mobile application. This allows owners to control key functions remotely, including charging and route planning. The iSMART app shows the vehicle’s precise location on the in-built map, ensuring drivers never lose track of where they have parked.

Charging again, always on the charge.

All MGS5 models carry the company’s 10-year/250,000km warranty. They are available through dealerships around New Zealand of which there are now nearly twenty. The MGS5 carries a five-star safety rating, achieved this year.
