Tesla’s long-rumoured entry-level Model Y Standard has been spotted undisguised on public roads in the US, with leaked images revealing how the brand plans to simplify the electric SUV to achieve a lower price point.
Posted to social media platform X, the photos show a Model Y prototype near Tesla’s Texas factory wearing revised front and rear bumpers, simpler lighting, and a few notable feature deletions. The stripped-back variant is expected to debut soon and could join the New Zealand line-up if priced competitively below the current Model Y RWD ($63,900 plus ORC).

In the US, pricing is rumoured to start around US$39,990.
Changes include simpler headlights without matrix tech, a black trim strip replacing the full-width rear light bar and potentially smaller 18-inch ‘Aperture’ wheels. A solid black glass roof, new front bumper camera, and revised bumpers also feature.
Inside, cost-saving measures continue with manual steering column adjustment, cloth and leather-look upholstery, a seven-speaker sound system instead of 15, and the removal of the rear touchscreen. The rear air vents are now manually adjustable and power-folding seats appear to be replaced by manual versions.

The Standard model is expected to retain the 15.4-inch central display, while luggage space drops slightly to 2124 litres. Tesla’s website code also hints at manual side mirrors, though details remain unclear.

While Tesla hasn’t confirmed drivetrain specs, reports suggest it could use a 62.5kWh LFP battery with around 500km of range (WLTP).
With Tesla New Zealand recently adjusting Model 3 pricing and range options, a cheaper Model Y would likely prove popular with Kiwi buyers seeking a more accessible EV SUV. An official reveal is expected in the coming weeks.
