Subaru confirms ‘Strong’ hybrid for new Forester

by Richard Edwards
February 10, 2025

Subaru has revealed its long-awaited next-generation Forester Strong Hybrid at the Chicago Auto Show, confirming the popular SUV will arrive in New Zealand mid-year with a new ‘Strong’ hybrid option.

The Forester will be the first Subaru model offered locally with the brand’s new generation hybrid technology, designed to deliver improved efficiency while retaining the go-anywhere capability that Kiwi drivers expect.

The new Forester Strong Hybrid pairs Subaru’s 2.5-litre Boxer engine with an electric motor and high-voltage battery for a total system output of 145kW. The drivetrain reportedly uses motors, controllers and a battery supplied by its equity-partner Toyota – considered the kings of the hybrid space.

In the US, Subaru claims this new hybrid setup boosts fuel economy by approximately 25 per cent on the EPA combined cycle, with a near 30 per cent improvement in lower-speed urban driving. On that test, the Forester Hybrid records 35 miles per gallon (about 6.7L/100km), while total driving range is claimed at 935 kilometres per tank.

For those considering a petrol-only model, Subaru says the next-generation 2.5-litre Boxer engine remains available, producing 136kW (as per overseas specs) – though final New Zealand figures will be announced closer to launch. An electronically-controlled continuously variable transmission (E-CVT) is used on the hybrid, while the standard Forester will continue with a Lineartronic CVT.

Keeping the Off-Road Edge
Despite introducing advanced electrification, the new Forester retains Subaru’s mechanical Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive – rather than adopting an on-demand rear electric motor setup. Core off-road features such as the X-Mode Dual Mode system, Hill Descent Control, and Active Torque Vectoring are carried over, helping the Forester maintain the rugged, all-terrain reputation it has built over the years. Ground clearance remains at a class-leading 220mm, ensuring it can tackle New Zealand’s challenging backcountry, while still offering comfortable entry and exit for everyday driving.

Technology and Safety
Inside, the next-gen Forester receives a tablet-style 11.6-inch Multimedia system with wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, plus Subaru’s EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology as standard. Selected variants also feature a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster to complement the updated infotainment system.

Inchcape General Manager, Kym Mellow, says the new model will build on the Forester’s strong heritage.

“New Zealanders have trusted the Subaru Forester for decades … This next-generation model will proudly continue that award-winning legacy.”

Coming Soon to NZ
Further New Zealand-specific details, including final power outputs, pricing, and trim levels, will be announced closer to launch. Prospective buyers can register their interest at Subaru New Zealand’s website to stay updated.
