Skoda performs well in latest round of crash testing

by Kyle Cassidy
July 16, 2024

The new Skoda Superb and Kodiaq will be along soon, and both have been given a five star award for safety in the latest round of Euro NCAP testing.

The Skoda Kodiaq achieved 84 per cent, while the Skoda Superb achieved 87 per cent of the total maximum points. Skoda says each and everyone of its new models introduced since 2008 has achieved a five-star rating from the crash testing regime.

While the Superb wasn’t actually tested, the new VW Passat, the sister car to the Superb was crashed, and NCAP says the rating also applies to the Superb. The new Skoda Superb and Volkswagen Passat were jointly developed by Skoda Auto as part of the Beta+ project.

The Superb achieved 93 per cent for Adult Occupant protection, 87 per cent for Child Occupant protection, 82 per cent for Vulnerable Road User protection, and 80 per cent for Safety Assist systems. This rating positions the Superb as the second-safest car in the 2024 Euro NCAP rankings.

Meanwhile, both the new Tiguan and Kodiaq were tested independently, both gaining a five star rating. However, the Kodiaq rated 89 per cent in the Adult protection, 83 per cent in child occupant safety, 82 per cent in vulnerable road user category and 78 per cent in safety assist. The same numbers for the Tiguan were 83, 88, 84 and 78.

There are up to ten airbags for the Å koda Superb and up to nine airbags for the Å koda Kodiaq, including a central airbag between the front seats in both cars.

Assistance systems in both models include Front Assist with predictive pedestrian and cyclist protection, Side Assist including Rear Traffic Alert, as well as Collision Avoidance Assist, Turn Assist, Crossroad Assist and Exit Warning. Adaptive Cruise Control includes Adaptive Lane Assist with roadworks recognition. A new nano radar sensors positioned in the right and left corners of the front apron further enhance the performance of assistance systems such as Front Assist or Crossroad Assist. The new Attention and Drowsiness Assist monitors driver behaviour, assesses the driver’s potential level of fatigue and triggers visual and acoustic warnings in the Virtual Cockpit if necessary.
