This is the Shelby Super Snake from Shelby American and it packs a venomous 619kW (830hp). That makes it the most deadly of its type yet.

“We designed the Shelby Super Snake to be the pinnacle of our performance cars based on Ford’s Mustang,” said Joe Conway, CEO of Shelby American.

“By collaborating with the Ford Motor Company, Whipple Superchargers and other top brands, our Las Vegas team created our best Shelby Super Snake yet.”

The 5.0L V8 powered SSS is so named because of its supercharger that gives it supercar power. A new exhaust also offers better airflow. The suspension, brakes and cooling are enhanced to leverage the powertrain’s potential.

What lies beneath the bonnet of the new Shelby.

The roots of the latest offering from Shelby began with the Ford GT that won Le Mans in 1966. Gary Patterson, President of Shelby American said “That car’s engine was the inspiration for the first Shelby Super Snake, a one-off experimental built for high-speed testing on the track. Over the years, the car has evolved but continued to keep its ‘competition-edged’ personality. The 2024 example is pure American performance” he added.

This is Shelby American’s first car based on the new S650 Ford Mustang platform. “We set out to make the 2024 Ford Mustang the most technically sophisticated Shelby Super Snake yet,” said Vince La Violette, Shelby American Vice President of Operations and Senior Designer. “Through careful engineering, we were able to add more power while working to keep the weight more balanced.

“With the car’s competition heritage, we knew it was critical to dial up a car that is enjoyable during daily commutes and deeply rewarding during spirited driving. Functionality drove every decision. This car checks all the boxes.”

The 2024 model is available with a manual transmission or automatic, as well as either a fastback or convertible body style. Only 250 in total will be available worldwide with production beginning later this year and pricing to be announced soon.

The new performance weapon will be offered in New Zealand through Shelby New Zealand in limited numbers.

Both coupe and convertible guises are available.

Malcolm Sankey, the company MD said “Shelby has been recognised globally as the premium upgrade for Ford Mustangs since 1965, and almost 60 years later the iconic brand still remains very much in a class of its own.”
