Rentals boost new car registrations in November 2023

New car registrations in November 2023 have been bolstered by a whopping 4466 rental vehicles, making up 30.7 per cent of last month’s overall figure. It’s also the highest number of rentals registered in New Zealand in the past four years.

Compared to the same time last year, new car registrations in November 2023 were 7.1 per cent lower at 14,519 units. Year-to-date, new car registrations in 2023 are 8.9 per cent lower than 2022 and 9 per cent lower than 2021.

What were the top three models for November 2023?

The top model for November 2023 was the Toyota RAV4, with 1419 units hitting the road, followed by the Ford Ranger (1083 units), and finally, the Mitsubishi Outlander (558 units).

Who led the market in November 2023?

The leading carmaker in New Zealand for last month was Toyota thanks to 3018 of its models being registered, which translates to a 26.3 per cent share. Next up was Mitsubishi with a 9.3 per cent market share, while MG rounded out the top three with a 7.8 per cent slice of the pie.

How did EVs, plug-in hybrids, and hybrids do?

The top three fully electric vehicles registered in New Zealand last month were the Tesla Model Y (544 units), the MG 4 (469 units), and the BYD Atto 3 (338 units).

As for plug-in hybrids, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross was the most popular (314 units), followed by the Outlander (277 units), and the MG HS (239 units).

The Toyota RAV4 was the most registered hybrid in November 2023 (657 units), with the Corolla (485 units) following behind in second, and the Corolla Cross (370 units) in third.

What was the most popular segment?

Medium-sized SUVs continue to show their might in New Zealand by taking up a 41.3 per cent share of light passenger registrations, followed by compact SUVs at 23.4 per cent, and the small segment at 15.9 per cent.

Small to medium vehicle segments made up 90.2 per cent of light passenger vehicle registrations in November 2023.
