Roger Penske, the head of Penske Racing Inc., has apologized for recent “organizational failures”, having let go of key individuals he held responsible for the team’s recent misstep.
Following qualifying, Josef Newgarden and Will Power were sent to the back of the gris, and the team was fined $US200,000. Moreover, the race strategists for each driver were suspended. This happened after the two drivers were found to have unapproved parts attached to the rear of their cars.
The latest misstep follows an incident last year where the Penske team failed to adhere to the regulations.
Roger Penske has clearly had enough, announcing the departure of IndyCar team president Tim Cindric, managing director Ron Ruzewski, and general manager Kyle Moyer. They have all been with the organisation for at least 11 years, Cindric for 26. All three worked as race strategists for Team Penske drivers.
Team Penske said they “will have further announcements this week related to personnel and replacements for this weekend’s Indianapolis 500.”
Penske stated: “Nothing is more important than the integrity of our sport and our race teams. We have had organisational failures during the past two years, and we had to make necessary changes. I apologize to our fans, our partners, and our organisation for letting them down.”
IndyCar president Doug Boles held a press conference on Monday and said that this scandal is “devastating” to Mr. Penske.
Clearly, he was on the money, with the dismissals following soon after.
