Motor Trade Association (MTA) President Sturrock Saunders says that the former President, Rick Murrell, who died on the weekend in a boating incident, was a “natural leader” and a “joy to be around”.

Murrell passed away earlier this week. He was President of the MTA between 2010-12, and a Director from 2005-2010.
Mr Saunders says it was difficult to reflect on the loss of Rick as “I always expected him to be there.”
“I was lucky to experience his interactions with many sectors of society and his deep pride in his family and community.
“I was also fortunate to have spent time with him on the MTA Board, including when he became national President. He represented thousands of New Zealand motor industry businesses. And he did so with absolute commitment and enquiring intelligence.
“I regularly spoke with Rick, and he always was energetic, positive and interested in what others were doing. He had a natural energy that was a joy to be around. Rick was a gifted leader who could inspire, excite and do so with a deep determination and authenticity.
“I have utmost respect for Rick and will miss him dearly, including our regular ‘full gas’ catch ups, which I know many others will also miss.”
When Mr Murrell left office, he said that it had been an “honour and a privilege” to lead the MTA during a time when Vehicle Licensing Reform and Consumer Law Reform occupied much of MTA’s work, as well as the introduction of MTA’s Gift Card. Mr Murrell was also known for charity and community work in the Southland region.
Mr Saunders said Rick Murrell was a very popular and respected figure not just in the MTA but across the whole industry. He plans to attend Mr Murrell’s funeral on behalf of the MTA.
“I cannot imagine the grief Andrea, Bobby and the Murrell whanau and Southern Vehicle Sales team are going through right now. I send all the wider motor industry families’ love and heartfelt deepest condolences.”
