Nissan has revealed the first-ever X-Trail NISMO, giving its popular mid-size SUV a motorsport-inspired makeover. Set to go on sale in Japan from September 24, the new variant blends NISMO’s race-bred engineering with the everyday usability of the family-friendly X-Trail.

Billed as a “Grand Touring SUV that delivers a passionate experience,” the X-Trail NISMO has been tuned for sharper handling, stronger acceleration and improved ride comfort. Key to this is the suspension setup, which features Kayaba Swing Valve shock absorbers – a first for Nissan. The system is designed to minimise body roll, a challenge for high-riding SUVs, without compromising comfort.

Power is managed through Nissan’s e-4ORCE electric all-wheel drive system, which has been specifically recalibrated for the NISMO model. It sends more torque to the rear axle and optimises front-wheel control for better line-tracing when accelerating through corners. Different driving modes adjust throttle response and power distribution to suit conditions, with a SPORT mode prioritising responsiveness and an AUTO mode tuned for mid to high-range acceleration.

The X-Trail NISMO also gets Michelin Pilot Sport EV tyres mounted on 20-inch Enkei alloy wheels, designed to enhance steering response and brake cooling. Aerodynamics have been extensively reworked, with a front under spoiler, side skirts, diffuser-style rear bumper and racing-inspired fog lamps all contributing to reduced lift — Nissan claims a 29 per cent improvement compared with the standard X-Trail.

Styling cues include dark chrome accents, bold red trim and a distinctive NISMO logo up front, while the cabin carries a black-and-red theme. Buyers can also specify NISMO-tuned Recaro sports seats, complete with heating and power adjustment, for added support during spirited driving.

With its blend of performance upgrades and everyday practicality, the X-Trail NISMO marks the first time Nissan’s motorsport division has applied its expertise to the brand’s mid-size SUV. For now, sales are limited to Japan, but the launch underscores NISMO’s growing influence across Nissan’s global line-up.
