Nissan showcases next-gen ProPILOT with human-like AI

Nissan has unveiled the next step in its driver-assist technology journey, recently demonstrating its next-generation ProPILOT system in central Tokyo. The prototype fleet, based on the all-electric Ariya SUV, showcased advanced AI-powered driving in dense, complex urban traffic ahead of a planned market launch in Japan during FY27.

The new system combines Nissan’s own “Ground Truth Perception” suite, which leverages next-generation LiDAR, with Wayve’s “AI Driver” software. Together, the technologies promise a step-change in safety and confidence behind the wheel, moving beyond traditional driver assistance toward human-like decision-making.

The hardware package includes 11 cameras, five radar sensors and a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor capable of detecting objects at greater distances than cameras alone which is particularly valuable in high-speed or low-light conditions. This forms the backbone of Nissan’s Ground Truth Perception, ensuring reliable awareness of the vehicle’s surroundings.

Wayve’s AI Driver adds the intelligence. Using embodied AI, it doesn’t just identify objects but is said to understand the entire driving scene, anticipating how traffic will evolve and how the car’s actions might affect others. Apparently, the result is smoother, safer driving that adapts to sudden changes in the environment.

“This represents a major leap forward for ProPILOT,” said Nissan CTO Eiichi Akashi. “Our current ProPILOT 2.0 has been well received, but this next-generation system will deliver the feeling that a skilled human driver is behind the wheel. It will handle complex traffic conditions, providing greater confidence and peace of mind for all road users.”

Nissan says that since its debut, ProPILOT has evolved from single-lane highway assistance to multi-lane support with ProPILOT 2.0. The next-generation iteration aims to extend its capability into challenging city environments, where pedestrians, cyclists and unpredictable traffic flows push driver-assist systems to their limits.

According to the manufacturer, the project is part of its broader mission to deliver cleaner, safer, and more accessible mobility. The company plans to roll out the next-generation ProPILOT on select production models for the Japanese market from FY27, with further global applications expected to follow.
