Overnight, MG revealed the next generation of its affordable compact city car, the MG3, featuring a hybrid powertrain and a whole host of new technology.

The local arm of MG has confirmed that the new MG3 will go on sale in New Zealand later this year. However, when it lands, it will no longer be a sub-$20k car.

“There will be a price increase associated with the new model, thanks to the introduction of new world-class technology, safety updates, and all-new specification,” says MG New Zealand.

“The current MG3 is at the end of its lifecycle which means that now is the best time to buy a brand new car for the price of a used one, before the new model hits our shores.”

With that out of the way, the new model will only be offered with a hybrid powertrain consisting of a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor that produces 143kW all up. Power is sent through a three-speed automatic gearbox to the front wheels, while a small 1.83kWh battery allows for additional electric-only driving range.

In terms of performance and efficiency, the new MG3 is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100km/h in 8 seconds, while it can achieve a fuel economy of 4.4-litres per 100km.

Depending on the situation at hand, the hybrid system can automatically select from several driving modes, including an all-electric ‘EV’ mode that draws power from a small 1.83kWh battery.

While local specification has yet to be confirmed, overseas models will come equipped with a 7-inch digital instrument screen and a 10.25-inch central infotainment system.

All MG3s will come with satellite navigation as standard, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. We’re also pleased to find a bank of piano-key switches on the centre console rather than haptic touch alternatives.

Other features include a six-speaker sound system, four USB ports, rear parking sensors, and a rear-view camera. Upgraded trim levels will add leather-like upholstery, keyless entry, adaptive cruise control, and more.

More details regarding the exact price and specification of the new MG3 will be revealed closer to the local launch in New Zealand.
