New Nissan CEO committed to performance – hints at new GT-R

by Kyle Cassidy
March 28, 2025

Nissan’s newly appointed CEO, Ivan Espinosa, has reaffirmed the brand’s commitment to performance and excitement, assuring enthusiasts that halo models like the Z and GT-R will remain central to Nissan’s future—and will be available worldwide.

Speaking on the importance of performance cars at a recent Nissan event where the company laid out its future plans, Espinosa has been reported as saying: “Driving excitement will always be at the heart of Nissan. This is what we do.” His comments indicate that while Nissan continues its journey toward electrification, it won’t abandon the sports cars that have defined its legacy.

The R35-generation GT-R is finally being retired after an impressive production run dating back to 2007. While the model has been absent from key markets for years due to tightening emissions regulations, Nissan remains dedicated to high-performance vehicles.

“We will continue to invest in models that embody Nissan’s spirit. I want four or five standout vehicles in our lineup that truly represent our brand’s DNA,” said Espinosa. “These cars should be available worldwide, keeping the dream of driving excitement alive.”

Nissan’s commitment to performance extends beyond just the Z and GT-R. Espinosa also cited the Patrol SUV as a key model in the brand’s identity, hinting that excitement comes in many forms within Nissan’s lineup.

Looking ahead, the transition to electrification presents challenges for Nissan’s performance division. In 2023, the brand unveiled the Hyper Force concept, a glimpse at a potential electric GT-R successor. However, Espinosa previously noted that such a vehicle must wait until electric car technology advances sufficiently.

“The current shift toward electrification makes things difficult,” he admitted. “But in a few years, as regulations align with more electrified powertrains, it might be easier to make this happen. This is what I dream of achieving.”

For now, Nissan remains committed to its performance roots, ensuring that excitement remains at the core of the brand—whether through petrol power or the promise of electrification in the near future.
