The Motor Trade Association (MTA) says the appointment of Mark Darrow as Chair of the Establishment Advisory Group (EAG) for the automotive sector is an inspired decision.

MTA Head of Advocacy, James McDowall (below), says Mr Darrow is vastly experienced in a range of governance roles. He is also widely respected for his work in the automotive sector.

“Mark is a real powerhouse, and as a former Director of MITO (Motor Industry Training Organisation) completely understands the importance of automotive industry work-based training,” McDowall says.

“The industry has heartily welcomed his appointment. Mark will provide real leadership not only to the EAG but beyond.”

Mr McDowall says Mark Darrow is well-versed in industry training, having previously chaired Primary ITO. He has also led large-scale change and workforce development initiatives. He brings extensive governance experience, a deep understanding of vocational education, and a strong commitment to industry outcomes.

Mr Darrow boasts an impressive CV, including:

  • Chair, MTF Finance
  • Chair, Armstrong’s
  • Chair, Civil Aviation Authority
  • Chair, TSB Bank
  • Chair, Inland Revenue (Risk and Assurance Committee)
  • Former Deputy Chair, Auckland Transport
  • Former Director (Ministerial Appointment), NZTA
  • Former Director, MTA.

The role of the EAGs is to ensure the Industry Standards Boards (ISB) hit the ground running on day one. It includes working with the Minister and TEC on formation of the full ISB Board, and employment of the Executive team.

The Automotive, transport and logistics ISB will be responsible for setting standards for vocational education and training, and endorsing programmes to ensure they meet industry needs. It also ensures training is relevant, high-quality, and aligned with workforce demands.

Joining Mr Darrow on the EAG are Jennifer Moxon and Sherelle Kennelly.

“MTA and others strongly advocated for MITO to return to industry ownership and that the standard setting body should be industry-led,” Mr McDowall says.

“We are pleased the Government took our advice, and progress so far is promising for learners and industry.”

The MTA-led Automotive Industry Taskforce is now encouraging suitable candidates to apply to join the ISB.

More information about ISBs is available on the TEC (Tertiary Education Commission) website.
