MG’s larger S6 EV SUV debuts. Will it come to NZ?

Two MGS6 models in red and gold

MG has revealed its new S6 electric SUV in the UK. The MGS6 continues the brand’s push into larger, more sophisticated models equipped with the latest technology.

Built on MG’s Modular Scalable Platform, already used in the MG4, the MGS6 EV promises space, refinement and sharp handling, all while delivering family-friendly practicality. It is essentially a larger, better equipped S5, while it also offers more powerful motor combinations.

In terms of size, it is 4708mm long with a 2835mm wheelbase. For comparison, the S5 is 4476mm long, sitting on a 2730mm wheelbase. The S6 also offers more luggage space, the boot capacity quoted at 674L to the S5’s 450.

Three variants, two drivetrains

MG in the UK is launching the MGS6 EV in three specifications, each using a 77 kWh battery with the choice of rear-wheel drive or dual-motor all-wheel drive.

MGS6 EV SE Long Range: single-motor, 180kW, WLTP range of 529km.
MGS6 EV Trophy Long Range: same power and range as the SE but with additional comfort and tech features.
MGS6 EV Trophy Dual Motor: twin motors, 266kW, 0–100km/h in 5.1 seconds, with a WLTP range of 484km.

All models support rapid public charging from 10 to 80 per cent in 38 minutes and offer five drive modes plus five levels of energy regeneration, including One-Pedal driving.

Premium cabin and maximum practicality

Inside, MG promises a step up in ambience and usability. A dual-screen layout features across the range, with a 10.25-inch HD digital cluster and a 12.8-inch infotainment display. Trophy variants add a Head-Up Display, heated and ventilated front seats, an 11-speaker audio system, and a panoramic sunroof.

Storage is abundant, with 30+ compartments, a large cubby beneath the centre console, and generous luggage capacity: 674 litres boot space (up to 1910 litres with seats folded) and a 124-litre frunk.

Safety and Efficiency

A strong body structure (over 80% high-strength steel) underpins the MGS6’s 5-star Euro NCAP score. Seven airbags are standard, supported by the MG Pilot driver-assistance suite, which includes Autonomous Emergency Braking, blind-spot detection, lane-keeping, Intelligent Speed Assist and a driver-monitoring system. Drivers can also customise assistance features through MG Pilot Custom.

MG has collaborated with Continental on a new integrated braking booster for sharper brake response. On the SE and Trophy Long Range models, the SUV can stop from 62mph (100km/h) in 36 metres.

Performance and Driving Experience

The rear-wheel-drive versions produce 244PS (180kW) and 350Nm, achieving 0–62mph in 7.3 seconds. The dual-motor AWD model delivers 361PS (266kW) and 540Nm, hitting the benchmark sprint in 5.1 seconds and automatically engaging the front motor when traction is limited. Both versions are electronically limited to 124mph (200km/h).

Five driving modes — Normal, Sport, Comfort, Custom and Snow — combine with MacPherson front and multi-link rear suspension to deliver a more dynamic character than previous MG SUVs. The SE and Trophy RWD models boast an 11.1-metre turning circle, enhancing city manoeuvrability.

Design and Styling

MG has given the MGS6 EV a modern, technical appearance influenced by its Cyberster convertible. There’s a split front grille, new LED lighting signatures, load-bearing roof rails and a full-width rear light bar designed for both aesthetics and improved aerodynamics.

What it means for New Zealand

MG New Zealand has not yet confirmed whether the model will be made available locally. The brand has just launched the IM6, which is a larger more luxurious SUV than the S5, and this may suffice for a smaller market like NZ.
