The incoming MGU9 ute has received an ANCAP five-star safety rating. That’s largely based on the results of the Maxus eTerron 9, upon which it is based. MG also provided additional data to ANCAP.

The MGU9 is about to launch on the New Zealand market. Its ANCAP safety rating is based on testing of the Maxus eTerron 9 that was conducted in 2024.

This ANCAP safety rating applies to all MGU9 diesel variants. Overall ratings are 91 per cent for adult occupant protection and 89 per cent for children. The vulnerable road user score was 84 per cent while the Safety Assist score was 85 per cent (accident prevention).
Dual frontal, side chest- and side head-protecting airbags are standard, along with a front centre airbag to prevent head clashes.

Autonomous emergency braking, lane support system with lane keep assist (LKA), lane departure warning (LDW) and emergency lane keeping (ELK) are all present. So too is advanced speed assistance system (SAS) with speed sign recognition.
Installation of child restraints in the second row centre seating position is not recommended because there is no top tether.

Kevin Gannon, MG Motor Business Director, said: “We wanted a dual-cab ute product that is designed and engineered for all genres of customers and the needs of ute buyers locally.
“We’re proud to announce the MGU9 meets ANCAP five-star safety rating standards, ensuring excellent protection for drivers, passengers and pedestrians. Our aim is to achieve a five-star safety rating for all new MG models introduced to the market.”

Special features of MGU9 include multi-link rear suspension, a 3.5-tonne braked towing capacity, MultiFold seats and MG Smart Hatch cabin-to-tub access.
