MG Motor has announced a shift in strategy for the New Zealand market, placing hybrid technology at the centre of its product planning under a new “Hybrid First” approach.
The move sees a growing emphasis on petrol-electric options, led by a revised HS range and the arrival of a new HS Super Hybrid model. It also includes price adjustments across much of the MG line-up, spanning hybrid, EV, and petrol-powered vehicles.
While MG has gained traction locally through the value-focused ZS EV and, more recently, the MG4 electric hatch, the pivot suggests the brand is now hedging its bets in response to softening EV demand and rising interest in lower-emission combustion alternatives.
HS Super Hybrid expands award-winning line-up
The new HS Super Hybrid joins a model range that includes the HS Hybrid+, MG3 Hybrid, and ZS Hybrid — and builds on the existing HS’s reputation as one of the country’s best-value mid-size SUVs. The HS was named NZ Autocar’s 2024 Value Car of the Year.
The Super Hybrid introduces a larger 24.7kWh battery paired with a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine. While not yet confirmed as a plug-in hybrid, the system supports electric-only driving at lower speeds, with the petrol engine providing additional power at higher loads and speeds.
MG claims the system delivered over 880km in internal testing between Sydney and Melbourne on a single tank and charge, with over 100km still showing on the range readout. Official fuel consumption and EV-only range figures have yet to be released.
Two trim levels will be offered:
- HS Super Hybrid Excite – $52,990 + ORC
- HS Super Hybrid Essence – $56,990 + ORC
Final specifications are expected ahead of the model’s New Zealand launch in September.
Hybrid pricing and positioning
The HS Super Hybrid headlines MG’s broader “Hybrid First” strategy, which includes realigned pricing across several models. The updated HS Hybrid+ now starts at $44,990, with the higher-spec Essence Hybrid+ listed at $48,990.
Prices have also dropped across the ZS and MG4 EV line-ups, with savings of between $2000 and $5000 depending on the variant.
The brand’s hybrid push arrives at a time when buyers appear to be re-evaluating their options amid EV policy changes and rising living costs. For MG, the new strategy allows it to position its hybrids as a stepping stone for drivers seeking greater fuel efficiency without full reliance on charging infrastructure.
