An all-electric MG 2 hatchback has all but been confirmed by MG Motor’s UK boss David Allison.
Speaking in an interview with Autocar UK, Allison said: “it’s the obvious area of the market that’s next to happen” and “we will absolutely be in there”.

Allison shared that MG Motor is still “over a year away from it”, meaning it won’t be a thing until at least 2027.
If MG was to bring a small electric hatch to New Zealand, it would bring competition to the BYD Atto 1 and Dongfeng Box at the entry point to the market.
Currently, both the Atto 1 and the Box start from $29,990, and it’s likely the MG 2 would land in that area to compete with both.

Aside from David Allison’s comments, nothing official has been shared on this upcoming model, but it’s likely it will use the SAIC Modular Scalable platform, which currently underpins the MG4.
Considering the size of the UK market, the benchmark would likely be the Renault 5 EV, which has a driving range of up to 400km.
This would eclipse both that of the BYD Atto 1 and Dongfeng Box in terms of range, as they both sit just above the 300km mark.
