Mercedes-AMG boss Michael Schiebe is leaving his role to lead Mercedes’ production and quality divisions.

It is part of a management shake-up following the departure and retirement of technology boss Markus Schäfer. The new chief technology officer is Jörg Burzer who steps aside as head of production, quality and supply chain management.

Chief technology officer Schäfer is retiring after a 30-year stint at the Stuttgart firm. Schiebe has run the Mercedes-AMG and ‘Top-End Vehicle’ divisions since March 2023. He originally joined the company in 2004. An announcement has yet to be made on who takes over at the helm of AMG.
The sports division of Mercedes is entering a pivotal period of transformation as it electrifies its line-up. First up is the production version of the GT XX concept (top). The electric flyer is the replacement for the V8-engined GT 4-Door. A technically similar super-SUV will follow as a rival to the new electric Porsche Cayenne. It will bring at least (746kW) 1000bhp to the battle.
The new head of AMG will also have the responsibility of reviving the C63 sports saloon and estate. The most recent example, a PHEV with a four-cylinder engine at its heart was a flop, unloved by the fans because of the noise it didn’t make. A facelift due out in 2026 will introduce a new six-cylinder engine.

Meantime, Burzer will take technological leadership of a company that is busy preparing new vehicle platforms, drivetrain components, battery technologies and interior concepts.
Martin Brudermüller, chairman of Mercedes’ supervisory board, hailed the departing Schäfer as “a highly esteemed colleague, who commands the highest respect both internally and externally”.
He added: “As the architect of our technology strategy, he has been instrumental in driving Mercedes-Benz’s transformation from a traditional car manufacturer to the electrification of our portfolio and the integration of digital systems. The current product offensive clearly bears his signature.
“His commitment to technological excellence and his deep connection to the Mercedes-Benz brand are reflected not only in his long-standing service to the company but also in his role as chairman of the supervisory board of Mercedes-Benz Grand Prix Ltd.”
Mercedes says the changes will “maintain experience and continuity in top management while providing fresh impetus and a deliberate rejuvenation on the board of management”.
