Mercedes-AMG is readying a Porsche Taycan rival

Prototypes of Mercedes-AMG’s flagship four-door EV have emerged, shedding some of their camouflage. Images, including some teaser shots without much camouflage, reveal certain design and engineering characteristics. 

The new performance EV was previewed by the AMG Vision Concept from 2022. In final form, it launches next year as a supersaloon that will go head to head with Porsche’s Taycan Turbo S/GT and Audi E-Tron GT RS Performance. 

The low flyer has four portals, frameless doors and large wheels. Unlike EQ forebears, AMG stylists have conjured up a more distinct bonnet covering a low-slung front end. The car has an elegant outline. 

A Kamm-style tail differs from the more rounded rear that’s been a staple of Merc’s EQ design language recently.

This new model is based on fresh architecture dubbed AMG.EA. It introduces new tech including axial flux motors that are lighter and more power dense than the radial motors used in its former EVs.

The bespoke platform will support 21-inch wheels and likely sophisticated chassis technology. From the concept you can expect vertical strakes on the nose and a new three-pointed motif found within the headlights.

Expect a flat battery pack and dual-motor layout with at least 750kW to compete with the top Taycan. The Turbo GT is capable of 0-100km/h in 2.2sec so the AMG will be wanting to match that.

Likely chassis tech includes rear-wheel steering and active roll control. AMG may even debut a fully-active system like in the latest Porsche Taycan. 

Teaser images of the new electric super saloon have also already been released, showing it in sideways testing near the Arctic Circle.

Expect prices to rival those of the top Taycan Turbo GT that costs $460k here. 

AMG says the new model is fairly early in its testing phases but expect to hear more over the coming 12 months. Mercedes has confirmed it will be on the market sometime in 2025.
