McLaren Racing to auction F1 and other race cars

McLaren Racing is teaming up with auction house RM Sotheby’s for the sale of three of its future competition cars. The auction will take place in Abu Dhabi on December 5, coinciding with the 2025 season finale F1 race. Each car will be auctioned separately.

McLaren Racing’s ambition is to reclaim the prestigious motorsport Triple Crown. That means winning the Monaco GP, Indianapolis 500 and Le Mans 24 Hours. The brand has already managed this. It won the Indy 500 in 1976 (Johnny Rutherford) and the Monaco GP in 1984 (Alain Prost). It also took out the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1995 (JJ Lehto, Yannick Dalmas and Masanori Sekiya).

So the sale will feature a McLaren race car from the 2026 FIA Formula 1 World Championship (the Norris or Piastri car), and another from the NTT IndyCar Series. It will also include the inaugural FIA World Endurance Championship challenger from 2027, one of six made. 

McLaren Racing CEO, Zak Brown, announced the sale at this year’s Monterey Car Week in California. There the company has an F1 Team car and an Arrow McLaren IndyCar Team show car. 

This is the first time a future Formula 1 car is auctioned ahead of its official debut. Buyers will take delivery of their purchases after the cars have competed in their respective racing series.
